WE WERE THERE. WE ARE HERE. KEEP OUR STORIES ALIVE. London’s Waterloo Bridge is also known as the Ladies Bridge in memory of the women who helped rebuild it during WWII. Joy Miessi commemorated the valiant efforts of these forgotten women with a bright and bold mixed media piece which was shown in vinyl on a wall at Southbank Centre, close to the very bridge they built. During a talk at Tate Modern, Joy gave us some insight into their creative process, especially as there was limited information available, but their distinctive style of mark making really captured an important message. My mind was blown when I found out the original work was tiny in comparison to its final display form.
